#141 Star Wars: Smuggler's Gambit

With any luck Star Wars radio drama fans may have something new to look forward to. After months of writing, casting and other preparations Kyle Newman's Star Wars: Smuggler's Gambit was performed live at the Star Wars Celebration VI convention in Orlando, Florida over the weekend of August 23-26, 2012. The story is based on concepts from original Star Wars radio drama writer Brian Daley's Han Solo Adventure books and set just after the events of Star Wars: A New Hope. According to Newman Smuggler's Gambit was designed to be a fun, fast-paced story in the spirit of the classic Star Wars radio dramas written by Daley. The story not only incorporates original characters such as Han Solo, Chewbacca, Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, R2D2, and Boba Fett but also a few new characters as well.

Newman's desire to create a quality production spurred him on to seek out a highly talented cast of actors. And he found one when he cast the actors from The Clone Wars Animated Series. In the cast are...
David Collins as Han Solo
Ashley Eckstein as Ryder Thorne – a conflicted upstart hustling her way through the outer rim who suddenly finds herself in way over her head on a deal…
Sam Witwer  as Ro Kurota – a brash, young smuggler turned bounty hunter eager to make a name for himself.
Matt Lanter as Luke Skywalker
Dee Bradley Baker  as Black Sun crime lord “Prince Xixor” and “Sweeper” – an unsavory face from Solo’s past.
Clare Grant as Princess Leia
Matthew Wood as Bib Fortuna
Daniel Logan as Boba Fett
Tom Kane Imperial Lieutenant Kane, the “Narrator” and the program’s “Announcer”

Jimmy Mac (Forcecast) Producer and Sound Effects. Over 100 sound cues were played during the production.

No doubt Star Wars fans will be waiting with eager anticipation to find out if last weekends live performance of Star Wars: Smuggler's Run radio drama was recorded for future release.

Script Intro from Kyle Newman:

NARRATOR
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…
MUSIC: STAR WARS MAIN THEME (LOUD FOR 25 SECONDS THEN FADE DOWN, PLAYING UNDER…)
NARRATOR
Several months have passed since the Rebellion’s surprise victory over the Empire at Yavin IV and the destruction of the DEATH STAR.  With the location of their secret base revealed, the Rebels are now on the run, dangerously adrift in space.

Realizing the Imperial armada is determined to quash the growing insurgency at all costs, PRINCESS LEIA, youthful leader of the Rebel Alliance, orders a covert galaxy wide search for a new hideaway to continue the Rebellion.

Spearheaded by former smugglers HAN SOLO and CHEWBACCA the Wookiee, a small reconnaissance team has been dispatched to ABROSSOS VI in hopes of securing new refuge.  But Han and Chewie, not exactly team players, are still unsure of their place in the Alliance…

The Mark of Zorro Sequel

According to the Zorro Productions Inc website and the Zorro Swashbuckling News and Updates blog a sequel to The Mark of Zorro is forthcoming. Award winning Australian dramatist Barry Creyton (Australian Broadcasting Corporation and BBC) will man the helm for the follow up production replacing the late Yuri Rasovsky. Interestingly Creyton has a reputation for creating cinematic audio drama so the expectation will be for high octane sound effects and music. Val Kilmer and Ruth Livier will return to reprise their roles as Zorro and Lolita Pulido. No word on what other noted Hollywood names might be cast in the follow up to the Grammy and double Audie nominated drama.

#44 Strange Pursuit -Chick Bowdrie (Louis L'Amour)

Another great western tale from Louis L'Amour.

Bowdrie wants Charlie Venk. Big, handsome, Venk is best known for rustling cattle, robbing banks and shooting men out of their saddles. Shrewd and intelligent, Venk is riding hard on the sorrel he's stolen right from under another man. His good looks, fast gun and reckless wit have already made him a legend. So Bowdrie has to be smarter, faster and more relentless in tracking his prey across dusty cowtowns, barren desert landscapes and through the canyons and pine forests of northern Arizona into deadly Apache territory. But he never dreamed he'd be called upon to snatch Venk from the jaws of a horrible death to prove to the wild young killer that he's finally met his match!

#42 Death In The Clouds - Hercule Poirot (BBC)

John Moffatt returns to the role of Hercule Poirot in Agatha Christie's Death in the Clouds. Philip Jackson (A&E/BBC Hercule Poirot TV series) reprises his TV role of Chief Inspector James Japp for this radio drama presentation.

On a flight from Le Bourget to Croydon, on which Hercule Poirot is an apprehensive passenger, a woman is found dead. A doctor on board is inclined to put it down to a wasp-sting, but Poirot suspects that a poisoned dart is the real cause—and, perhaps rather too conveniently, a blow pipe is discovered stuffed down the back of his seat. Clearly, the murder can only have been committed by one of the passengers or crew on the plane. But which one? Poirot, Japp, and M. Fournier of the Surete will make their way through shoals of red herrings before reaching an utterly unexpected conclusion.

#4 The Mark of Zorro

The Mark of Zorro written and produced by Yuri Rasovsky of Hollywood Theater of the Ear for Blackstone Audio features a brilliant cast that includes such names as Val Kilmer (Top Gun, Heat, Tombstone), Ruth Livier (Ylse), Armin Shimerman (Star Trek Deep Space 9), Elizabeth Pena (The Incredibles), and Meshach Taylor (Designing Women). This original tale of the masked hero of Spanish California is a swashbuckling adventure masterpiece.

Val Kilmer brings a menacing toughness to the role of Zorro with delivery that falls somewhere between the forcefulness of Tyrone Power, the authoritative command of Duncan Regehr and the charm of Guy Williams. Kilmer's performance is nothing less than stellar. Ruth Livier nearly steals the show as fiery Lolita Pulido while Armin Shimerman and Meshach Taylor are brilliant as the Landlord and Sgt Gonzalez. The voice acting in this production is absolutely fantastic. The entire cast gives a performance for the ages. The Mark of Zorro provides three hours of listening fun.

Without a doubt this is a great audio drama. In our opinion, one of the best ever made! Others too have found The Mark of Zorro to be a fine production as it has been selected by AudioFile Magazine, Parade Magazine, and Sound Commentary as one of the best audio books of 2011. It is also a 2012 Grammy Award nominee and a 2012 Audie Award nominee.

From Blackstone Audio:

Set in Los Angeles during the era of early nineteenth century Colonial Spanish California, the story introduces us to wealthy, young aristocrat Don Diego de la Vega, son of the richest ranchero in the country. Don Diego is an idler who has never concerned himself with more than the cut of his clothes. Unlike other full-blooded youths of his age, he presents himself as a fop, lacking in vigor, vitality, and strength. But Vega’s timorous reputation is merely a mask to conceal his alter ego—El Zorro. As Zorro, dressed in black and wearing a mask, he is transformed into a cunning swordsman who fearlessly pulls off dashing and daring escapades in his quest to avenge the helpless, aid the poor and oppressed, and punish cruel officials. Deemed an outlaw by California’s corrupt governor, he is ever-hunted by the Commandante of La Reina de Los Angeles, Capitan Ramón, and his henchman, Sergeant Pedro Gonzalez.
Forced to find a wife or lose his inheritance, Diego sets off to romance the fiery, outspoken Lolita Pulido, the most beautiful señorita in Los Angeles. Unimpressed with Diego’s passionless efforts to win her affections, Lolita finds herself attracted to the dashing and courageous Zorro. With the Pulido family having been impoverished by the corrupt governor, her father would see her married to the rich Don Diego. At the same time, the nobly born, but morally dissolute, Captain Ramón has also taken an interest in the fair señorita, making matters worse. As tensions heighten between Ramon and the Pulido family and pursuit of the masked avenger intensifies, Zorro leaves his mark on those who would perpetrate injustice.
The Mark of Zorro, masterfully adapted into a full-cast audio drama by the award-winning Hollywood Theater of the Ear especially for Blackstone Audio, is an exciting, action packed, swashbuckling adventure that will have listeners on the edge of their seats.

#3 Star Wars: Return of the Jedi

Return of the Jedi completes a great sci-fi trilogy yet has the merit to stand of its own greatness. Though it was some years in the making this incredible production finally gave the original trilogy it climactic conclusion. Nearly all of the cast from the precious radio productions return for Jedi with the exception of original movie cast members Mark Hamill and Billy Dee Williams. However, Joshua Fardon and Arye Gross take over admirably in the roles of Luke Skywalker and Lando Calrissian. Shorter in running time than it's two predecessors Return of the Jedi is still an out of this universe radio drama that will entertain listeners to the fullest degree.

From Highbridge Audio:
Fifteen years after National Public Radio's wildly successful adaptation of Star Wars, and thirteen years after The Empire Strikes Back, the trilogy hurtled to its long-awaited thrilling conclusion with Return of the Jedi.

#2 Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

The Empire Strikes Back may have been the greatest sequel ever made in radio or film. This drama captures the listener from the opening scene and never lets you go. One of the most amazing listening experiences in the field of radio drama from any era.

From Highbridge Audio:
Like its Star Wars predecessor, this electrifying drama boasts an outstanding cast (including Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Anthony Daniels as See Threepio, Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian, and John Lithgow as Yoda); a greatly expanded script, with many scenes not found in the movie; and audio engineering of unparalleled excellence.

#1 Star Wars Original Radio Drama (aka Star Wars: A New Hope)

The first in the Star Wars Radio Drama trilogy this production took radio drama to a whole new universe. It could be said that Star Wars did to the modern era of radio drama what Orson Welles' War of the Worlds did for radio drama of the OTR era. Star Wars brought life back to a medium that was long considered to be on life support in North America.

From Highbridge Audio:

When this series was first broadcast on National Public Radio in 1981, it generated the largest response in the network’s history: 50,000 letters and phone calls in a single week, an audience of 750,000 per episode, and a subsequent 40-percent jump in NPR listenership.

This landmark production, perhaps the most ambitious radio project ever attempted, began when Star Wars creator George Lucas donated the story rights to an NPR affiliate. Writer Brian Daley adapted the film's highly visual script to the special demands and unique possibilities of radio, creating a more richly textured tale with greater emphasis on character development. Director John Madden guided a splendid cast—including Mark Hamill and Anthony Daniels, reprising their film roles as Luke Skywalker and the persnickety robot See Threepio—through an intense 10-day dialogue recording session. Then came months of painstaking work for virtuoso sound engineer Tom Voegeli, whose brilliant blending of the actors’ voices, the music, and hundreds of sound effects takes this intergalactic adventure into a realm of imagination that is beyond the reach of cinema.
